Sheet music and scores
Publish your works as PDFs and interactive scores that play, sync recordings, sell or hire out parts, and teach with them.
Scores puts your works on your site at /scores: the printed edition as PDFs, an interactive score that reflows to any screen and plays, recordings that follow the music, and a catalogue of your works. It is on your plan as its own module, and uploading files needs the media library.
Adding a score
- 1Under Scores, press New score, type the work's title and press Create score.
- 2Under PDFs and recordings, press Upload full score, then Upload parts. Upload all the parts at once: each is named from its file name.
- 3For the interactive view, press Upload MusicXML and choose a compressed
.mxlexport from MuseScore, Sibelius, Dorico or Finale. Add recordings with Upload recording. - 4Set Visibility and Who can open the files, then save.
| Who can open the files | Who can read and hear the score |
|---|---|
| Everyone | Anyone who can open the page. |
| Signed-in members | Visitors signed in to your site's account area. |
| Purchasers | Signed-in visitors who bought or hired the work in your shop, and students you gave it to. |
The interactive score
With a MusicXML file, visitors choose between Interactive and As printed. The interactive score reflows to the width of the screen, can show one instrument alone, transposes and zooms. The address keeps the instrument and the key, so you can send a pupil a link to the clarinet part a tone lower.
- Play with the browser's synthesizer at any Tempo, and Loop bars to practise a passage.
- Switch on the Metronome to tick along.
- With one instrument on show, Hear sets what plays: this part, all parts, or all but this part, so a player can practise against the rest.
Koron and sori are drawn and played as quarter tones, including key signatures written with them, such as B flat and E koron. When a visitor transposes, the key shows its plain flats and sharps and each koron or sori note carries its own sign.
Recordings that follow the score
- 1Next to a recording, press Sync with score and choose the Score to follow.
- 2Play the recording and press Tap bar (or the space bar) at the start of every bar.
- 3Press Save sync. Visitors now choose the recording under Sound, and the cursor follows the players.
Perusal copies, parts and rentals
Mark a PDF Perusal and every page is stamped "PERUSAL COPY" with your site's address. It can be read on the page but not downloaded, for conductors to look at a work before hiring its parts. A newly marked file takes a moment to prepare.
When a score has two or more parts to download, its page offers Download all parts (ZIP).
To sell a score, link a product under Sold in the shop as. To hire out parts, set Who can open the files to Purchasers and, on the product, choose the score under Also opens scores with a Rental period (days), as described in Shop. Buyers see when their rental ends on the score's page and under Scores & rentals in their account. Purchased PDFs carry a line with the buyer's email and order number on every page.
The works catalogue
Fill in what conductors and programmers look for: Kind of work, Year, Duration, Instrumentation, Dastgah or avaz, Movements, the first performance, Commission, Publisher, ISMN and ISWC. Once you have six published works, /scores offers filters by kind, length and dastgah; filtering by a dastgah includes its avaz. Under Performances, list concerts, or link an event on your site so its date and venue stay in step. Search engines receive all of this as structured data.
Teaching with scores
- Under Students, press Give to a student: choose the instrument and the key and write a note. The piece appears under My pieces in their account.
- Mark up the PDF for this student adds your fingerings and markings. The student sees them beneath their own and can hide them.
- Signed-in members can Mark up their own copy of a PDF with a pen, a highlighter, an eraser and text labels. The marks are saved for them alone.
- In a course, a Which bar? question asks learners to click a bar in the score, as described in Courses.
Writing notation
Write notation opens the notation editor. Start from a line-up, key and time, or continue one of the score's MusicXML files. It saves on its own and with Save (Ctrl+S). Publish to score puts the notation on the interactive view, and Share draft with students lets students given the piece read your saved draft first. Shortcuts lists the keys, including koron and sori.
- History keeps earlier saves, about one every ten minutes while you write and one each time you publish; the newest 30 are kept. Preview one, then Restore this version. What you had is kept in the history first.
- Print / PDF lays the score out on A4 pages. In the print dialog, choose "Save as PDF" to keep a file.
Reading on stage
In the PDF view, Performance mode fills the screen and keeps a tablet from going to sleep. Choose Auto, One page or Two pages, and switch on Half-page turns to see the top of the next page while you finish the current one. Turn pages by tapping the sides, swiping, with the arrow keys or with a Bluetooth page-turner pedal.
Showing a score elsewhere
In a post, a page or a course lesson, the editor's Score button inserts one of your scores, Interactive or Printed (PDF), and can show only some bars. On a score open to everyone, Embed gives the code to show it on another website.
