Sending a newsletter

Collect subscribers on your site and email them issues written in the post editor.

Newsletter, in the Engage part of the sidebar, collects email subscribers on your site and sends them issues. You need the editor role or above. The meters at the top show your Subscribers and Emails this month against what your plan allows, and how many people are still waiting to confirm.

Getting subscribers

Visitors subscribe at /newsletter on your site — Sign-up page opens it — or through the Newsletter sign-up section on a landing page, with their email address and, if they like, their name.

  • With Double opt-in on, under Settings, a new subscriber gets an email and only counts once they confirm. Someone who unsubscribed before always confirms again.
  • Add subscribers, under Subscribers, takes up to 1,000 people pasted one per line: an address, Name <address>, or a row copied from a spreadsheet. They're added straight away, with no confirmation email — so only add people who asked to hear from you.
  • Export CSV downloads the list.

Writing and sending an issue

  1. 1Under Issues, press New issue. Start from a blank issue or from a published post — its title, excerpt and text come along — and press Create.
  2. 2Write the Subject, an optional Preview line (the text inboxes show after the subject) and the Body, in the same editor as your posts. Press Save.
  3. 3Press Send me a test to see it in your own inbox.
  4. 4Press Send to … subscribers, then Send now.

The issue's page then shows how many emails went out and how many failed. Every email carries your footer and an unsubscribe link that works in one click.

Settings

  • Sender name — who the email says it's from.
  • Reply-to address — where replies go. Leave it empty and replies aren't delivered anywhere.
  • Footer — a few lines at the end of every issue, such as your postal address.
