Moving your content to VPress

Bring posts, pages and images over from WordPress, Ghost or Medium — and take everything with you if you leave.

If your plan includes it, Import / Export brings an existing blog across in one upload. Posts keep their dates and slugs, so links people have already shared keep pointing at the right article.

Which files it reads

FromWhere to get the fileFile
WordPressTools → Export → All content.xml
GhostSettings → Advanced → Import/Export → Export your content.json
MediumSettings → Security and apps → Download your information.zip

You don't pick the format — it's recognised from the file. Files can be up to 32 MB.

Importing

  1. 1Open Import / Export and choose your export file.
  2. 2Leave Fetch images from the old site into the media library on, so images keep working after the old site is gone.
  3. 3Choose what happens to a post or page whose slug already exists: Ignore leaves yours alone, Substitute replaces it with the file's version, Import anyway creates a copy under a new slug.
  4. 4Press Import and wait for the report — it lists what came across and anything that was skipped.

What comes across

  • Posts and pages with their text, dates, slugs and status — drafts stay drafts, and scheduled posts stay scheduled.
  • Categories, tags, featured images and the images inside the text.
  • From WordPress, comments too, if you tick Bring comments along.
  • From Ghost, posts for paying members arrive members-only when your plan includes membership. Ghost's free-member posts stay public.
  • From Medium, your stories and drafts. Claps, and responses you wrote on other people's stories, stay on Medium.

Everything imported is created by you, and your plan's post and page limits apply. Re-importing the same file with Ignore or Substitute is safe to do more than once.

Taking it with you

Download export builds a WordPress export file (WXR) of every post, page, category, tag, comment and media reference. WordPress's own importer reads it, and so does this screen. For a copy that includes the media files themselves, see Backing up your website.

Moving a shop? Products are imported from the shop itself — see Setting up your shop.
